How to ask for Support

Asking for help can be really hard.

You might be scared, frightened, or worried what people might think of you if you let your guard down. But the truth is, the only way to get help is to ask. No one can help you if you don’t let them.  Something that continually stops people from asking is the fear of rejection. They either pose the question of help like, “I mean, maybe we could talk sometime in a bit,” to keep their ego from being hurt, or they just keep it to their selves. When someone carries their burden for a long time, they can display physical symptoms as well as emotional. That isn’t good, and when you start recognizing those symptoms, that is when you really need help.

Once you recognize that you need support, things are a bit simpler. First, ask someone you respect, not someone who will clam up or make you feel bad about asking. Next, make sure you are in a safe place, and not on the train or someplace busy where someone can overhear. Make sure you listen to your helper.  Respect his or her opinion, and ask questions. If they say something you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to ask.  Lastly, be sure to thank your confidant. It doesn’t need to be anything big, just a hearty thank you that shows that you value them and their opinion. If you do this, there are more likely to help you in the future. The most important thing here however would be to keep your personal image of yourself up. Don’t ever look down upon yourself because you asked for help. It will make you feel so much better to get your feelings out, even if you think it’s silly at first.
