Coping Strategies

These are the way to go when you are dealing with any kind of anxiety or sadness and you don't know how to deal with it.

 

1.)    Take a deep breath- No one makes rational decisions when their body is in panic mode. The first thing to do would be to calm down. Breathe in for four seconds, hold it for five seconds, and breathe out for four more seconds. Repeat this several times, and notice your body recognizing it is safe.

2.)    Talk about it- It’s hard to realize people are willing to do this and be there for you, but they are. Whether it be your parent, sibling, cousin, aunt, or therapist, someone is there for you. It helps to talk things out, just to think through your feelings.

3.)    Be creative- dance to your favorite song like nobody is watching, paint your heart out, be you! It doesn’t matter if it isn’t Picasso, this is just to let your feelings out in a creative way.

4.)    Visit a humane society- if you are as big of an animal lover as I am, dogs and cats will cheer me up no matter what has happened. Staff are usually happy to let you visit the animals, and you’ll brighten their day just being there. It’s a win win!

 

5.)    Focus on hope- hope is a beautiful thing. It provides us an umbrella when the skies are storming, and it is the light at the end of the tunnel. There is always some silver lining, however slim it may be and however long it will take to find it. It’s your job to discover it, no matter how dismal things may seem.
